Dr. Ramareddy V. Guntaka |

A Professor in the Department of Molecular Sciences, University of Tennessee, Dr. Ramareddy V. Guntaka is our Chief Scientific Adviser. He has three decades of hands on experience in virology and molecular biology and has published extensively in many high impact journals. He was a member of the team that discovered the proto-oncogenes for which the 1989 Nobel Prize was awarded to Drs. H.E.Varmus and J.M.Bishop. Dr. Ramareddy V. Guntaka was also the key person for cloning and commercialization of Hepatitis B vaccine (Shanvac-BTM) and Interferon Alpha 2b (ShanferonTM) by Shantha Biotechnics Ltd, Hyderabad. He is also credited with cloning and sequencing, for the first time, the entire genome of Indian isolates of Hepatitis C Virus. Recently he received the Genome Valley Excellence Award at the BioAsia 2006, held in February 2006.
Worldwide Patent No. 5,780,611 is an asset to Dr. Ramareddy V. Guntaka for Oligomers, which inhibit expression of Collagen Genes. This nucleic acid based drug is to control organ fibrosis (liver, kidney, lungs, heart, restenosis, etc.).
He guides Sudershan Biotech Ltd. in cloning and expression of Recombinant Therapeutic Vaccines for Viruses and Industrial Enzymes for the production of Antibiotics & Anti-viral drugs. He also guides Sudershan Biotech Ltd. in the future product pipeline and direction to achieve the set goals. |

He is the MD for Allu Entertainments, Geetha Arts, Geetha film distribution, Nest Constructions. Member of South India Film Chamber, Member of Telugu film producers council, Managing Trustee – Chiranjeevi Charitable trust First person to introduce computerized accounting platform for film distribution in 1989- the software is called APEX, APEX currently used in over 300 film distribution Houses in India. Introduced Telugu movies’ sound tracks on CD’ in 1993. Introduced Telugu movies on DTS in1996 and created domain names with movie titles and provided information online. |

He is a product of Guntur Medical College, postgraduate in M.S. Gen. Surgery from Stanley Medical College, Chennai, India. He was a Senior House Officer in Orthopedics, Accident and Emergency and lastly Neurosurgery. He settled in the field of Ophthalmology in 1983.He started his Ophthalmic Career with Dr. Lajpathi Rai Kolli and Dr. Srivastava P. Desai both consultant Ophthalmologists at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Doncaster. He has started Maxivision along with Dr. Tummuru Kodanda Rami Reddy, American NRI from Valparaiso and Mr. Danamudi PoornaChandra Rao of Vijayawada, A.P., in Hyderabad. He is a member of All India Ophthalmic Society (AIOS), Andhra Pradesh State Ophthalmologists Society (APSOS), European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), and American Academy of Ophthalmologists (AAO), American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS), and Eye Bank Association of India etc. He holds Padma Bhushan Siva Reddy Endowment Award for Best Researcher of the Year 1999 by AP Academic Of Sciences and Dr. Malleswar Rao Oration award in the year 2002 by A.P. State Ophthalmic Society at Guntur Medical College and received many other awards. Recently he became the Director of Chiranjeevi Eye Bank. |

He is a post graduate in Human Genetics from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam in A.P. India, PhD in Human Genetics from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam in A.P. India and Post Doctoral Fellow in 1996 from Institute of Genetics, Hospital for Genetic Diseases, Hyderabad, India. His major contributions are: a) First to report an extremely rare super oxide dismutase phenotype from India. b) First to sequence the Indian strain of Hepatitis C Virus under the guidance of Prof. R. V. Guntaka, University of Memphis, Tennessee, USA. Genbank (Acc.No.AY051292). Currently he is working as Scientist in the joint project entitled “Studies on Indian strains Hepatitis C Virus” sponsored by Dept. of Bio technology, Govt. of India to Sudershan Biotech Ltd., and Center for Liver Research and Diagnostics. He recently cloned and sequenced the complete genome of another Indian strain (genotype 1a) of Hepatitis C virus. The sequence has been submitted to Genbank (Acc. No. AY651061). He is associated with Sudershan biotech Ltd., as consultant scientist and working on protein purification and evaluation of recombinant HCV antigens. He has attended six international and fifteen national conferences and also participated in three international and ten national workshops. His research contributions are: a) Published 20 research articles and two review articles in various index journals. b) Guiding four research fellows in PhD program. c) Coauthored a text book “Carrier to Cancer- Hepatitis –B”. |

Worked as Professor and Head, Department of Gastroenterology, Osmania Medical College, Osmania General Hospital during 1975-1992, he was Principal, Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad from 1992 to `94 and retired as Director of Medical Education, Government of Andhra Pradesh. Presently he is the Director of Deccan College of Medical Sciences and allied institutions.
He is fellow of National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Medical Sciences, and American College of Gastroenterology. He is the Emeritus Professor of the National Academy of Medical Sciences and NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada.
He has Been awarded “Doctor of Science” by NTR University of Health Sciences (2003) and also been awarded “Padmashree” by the Government of India 2001. He was awarded “B.C. Roy award” for Medical Excellence and “Modi Unichem ICMR Award, in 1992. He has also been awarded “Kharazmi award” on Medical Research from President, Islamic Republic of Iran in 1996.
He has 130 Publications in Scientific Journals of National and International repute and he has presented 205 papers at National and International Conferences and contributed chapters in seven books.
He has trained seven DM candidates and under his supervision twenty-eight candidates have been awarded Ph.D degrees.
He is actively involved in Projects with ICMR, Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of Biotechnology (DBT) including Indo-US Vaccine Action Programme (VAP) Scheme. |
